Preparing Parish Liturgies: A Guide to Resources
Rita Thiron

The starting point of all liturgical preparation is the texts of the liturgical rites themselves. The first part of the book introduces the reader to all the liturgical books, providing background material for each one, as well as a detailed description of the contents, down to the paragraph number level, where needed. To understand the texts of the rites in their proper context requires knowledge of the “legislative” sections of the liturgical documents, and so a further chapter introduces the Instructions and Directories that govern the rites, as well as relevant encyclicals, pastoral letters, and guidelines.

The second part of the book brings all this information to bear on working through the actual preparation of liturgical celebrations for each feast and season of the liturgical year, as well as for all the sacramental occasions of parish life. An appendix offers thirty-three pages of useful worksheets and templates for liturgy preparation.

“Steeped in excellent liturgical theology and rooted in outstanding pastoral praxis and aids, this guide is up to date, concise, and better than any Cliff Notes on the liturgical documents. Mrs. Thiron establishes herself as a living encyclopedia of liturgical details and texts. When planning a liturgy, one can only hope he or she stands on ‘so firm a foundation!’”

Reverend Bill Wegher, Holy Redeemer Church, Burton. Michigan.

Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest:
A Pastoral-Liturgical Commentary
Michael Henchal
Revised 2007 edition Michael Prendergast

The US Bishops have revised the ritual for Sunday celebrations when no priest is available to celebrate Eucharist. This pastoral liturgical commentary, thoroughly revised by Michael Prendergast (a member the task group established by the Bishops Committee on the Liturgy to revise the Ritual) incorporates the changes in the revised Ritual and offers a thought provoking study of the theological and pastoral issues involved in such celebrations. This is an essential resource for parish liturgy committees and liturgy planners.

Liturgy and Justice
Lucio Caruso

“The Church's deepest nature is expressed in her three-fold responsibility: of proclaiming the word of God, celebrating the sacraments, and exercising the ministry of charity. These duties presuppose each other and are inseparable.” (Deus Caritas Est—God is Love, Encyclical Letter of Pope Benedict XVI) This series of four bulletin inserts brings out the connection between the celebration of the liturgy and working for justice.

The Mass: Our School of Prayer
 Rev. Thomas Iwanowski

“Lord, teach us to pray.” That request made of Jesus by his first disciples, is still made by his followers today. But if the celebration of the Eucharist is the “source and summit of the Church’s life,” as the Constitution on the Liturgy declared, what may we learn from that celebration about the best way to pray? These two bulletin inserts show us how.

The Liturgical Year
Thomas Dente

From Sunday, the primordial feast day, “the flowing stream winding its way through the soul, week after week, until it has carved out a canyon of faith in the believer which is deep, complex and beautiful,” through the annual round of the liturgical year, which “unpacks for us the mysteries of Christ in a more readable, digestible form,” Fr. Dente’s reflections will help parishioners to a fuller and more conscious participation in the mysteries celebrated. 2005.
